Watershed Information
The Dexter Lakes refer to the two lakes within the town of Dexter, Lake
Wassookeag and Puffers Pond (Echo Lake). Lake Wassookeag is the larger of the
two with a surface area of 1030.4 acres. Wassookeag drains an area of just under
ten square miles (9.86mi.) and flushes 0.39 times each year. The lake has an
average depth of 27 feet and a maximum depth of 86 feet. Wassookeag is listed as
an NPS Priority Watershed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection
due to its use as a public drinking water supply. Wassookeag is a highly prized
landlocked salmon and lake trout fishery and is also the headwaters of the East
Branch of the Sebasticook River. Land use in the watershed consists of urban,
agricultural and forested areas.
Puffers Pond (Echo Lake) is also located within the town of Dexter and enters
the East Branch 1.5 miles south of the Lake Wassookeag outlet. Puffers Pond
encompasses 89 acres with a maximum depth of 52 feet and flushes 1.63 times per
year. The Puffers watershed drains an area just under 2 square miles (1.93mi.)
and land use consists of agriculture and forested areas with ongoing
